ABOUT RAS AL KHAIMAH
The Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, located at the north end of the coast of the Arabian Gulf, is one of the seven Emirates that form the United Arab Emirates. Situated between the Hajar Mountains on the East and the Arabian Gulf on the West, Ras Al Khaimah shares mountainous borders with the Sultanate of Oman.
Over the last few years, RAK has reinvented itself as one of the best tourism destinations in the UAE. Form the Hajar Mountains in the East to the lovely Musandam peninsula, along with its white sandy beaches, desert dunes and warm local culture, RAK has quickly transformed itself as a holiday destination for tourists from around the world.
Like Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah is also divided in to two by a creek. The western half comprises of what we call the old Ras Al Khaimah which houses the various comprises government departments, educational institutions, shopping malls, hotels as well as residential areas and new construction projects. The eastern half on the other hand houses the Emiri court and a majority of the residential areas where the population reside.

- On the map, Ras Al Khaimah resembles a triangular tent top and therefore derives its name which translates to ‘the top of the tent’.
- Ras Al Khaimah boasts one the largest rock quarries of limestone and clay in the Middle East. This has helped RAK develop one of the most successful cement and ceramics industries in the world.
- The Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah enjoys greater topographical diversity than any of the other Emirates and its slightly greater rate of rainfall makes the Emirate more agriculturally independent from the others.
- Tools, tombs and other historical items can be found all around RAK, indicating human inhabitation in the area for thousands of years.
- Ras Al Khaimah is also known for the clan of Qawasim, known for once owning the strongest fleets ever seen in this part of the region.
- As RAK owns only 0.1% of the UAE oil reserves, the Emirate has diversified successfully in to real estate, tourism, building materials, manufacturing and the service industry.
- Julfar, predecessor of Ras AL Khaimah, was once considered as one of the most important ports in the middle-east.
SIGHTSEEING IN RAK
The Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has much to offer the keen traveler who wants to get acquainted with the history, nature and culture of this great nation. Scenic wadis, the picturesque desert, ancient sites and abandoned villages from ancient civilizations are only a few examples of what is to be seen.
The RAK National Museum is an excellent place to start your excursion. Situated in an old fort called Al Hisn, the structure itself is considered a monument as it was once used s the residential quarters of the Qawasim sheikhs since the times of H.H. Sheikh Salim bin Sultan Al Qawasim; the grandfather of the present ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
From there one can move on to see the old city where one can see the remains of the houses of the pearl merchants and sheikhs of the olden days. Moreover, watchtowers such as the Hudaibah Tower and Al Araibi Fort, once used to detect approaching enemy and to serve as a first line of defence are common tourist spots.
Being an Emirate with strong history and culture, the village of Shimal is a must-see as well. Shimal is famous for the archaeological treasures discovered within its borders, which prove that this district was continuously occupied for at least five millenniums. Areas of interest in Shimal include the Umm An Nar tombs and Wadi Suq Tombs, Sheeba’s Palace, fortification towers in the Al Ghub Disrtict, and Julfar, once considered as one of the most important ports in the middle-east.
Last but not least, the wadis, which in Arabic, referes to a streambed or valley, in Ras Al Khaimah are amongst the most impressive in the region. RAK boasts a large number of these wadis due to its mountainous topography. When in RAK make sure you visit a few of these wadis if not all of them.
